Germany calls on NATO to arm Ukraine with long-range weaponry
Thomas Röwekamp, Chair of the German Bundestag Defence Committee, has issued a compelling appeal for NATO allies to provide Ukraine with advanced long-range weapons and sought authorization to neutralize Russian drones before they penetrate NATO airspace.
Citing ongoing security challenges, Röwekamp emphasized the urgent need for a more robust and proactive response to the repeated violations of Polish airspace by Russian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) politician underscored the strategic imperative of empowering Ukraine to conduct offensive operations against critical Russian military infrastructure.
“In the context of the current conflict, the most effective countermeasure against drones is to target and destroy their production facilities and launch platforms. NATO partners must swiftly equip Ukraine with the capability to strike these assets deep within Russian territory,” Röwekamp stated firmly.
The Bundestag defence chief further advocated for preemptive measures to intercept and destroy Russian drones before they breach NATO airspace, stressing that waiting until these UAVs enter allied airspace is an inadequate and reactive approach.
