Germany considers exemptions to military service law
07 April 2026 12:32
The German Ministry of Defence is working on exemptions to a law requiring men aged 17–45 to obtain permission for trips abroad lasting more than three months.
The rule, which took effect in January as part of military service reforms, sparked public debate because it theoretically affects millions of men, Caliber.Az reports, citing Politico.
Officials emphasised that the law remains in force, but the development of detailed provisions will limit its practical impact and prevent excessive bureaucracy.
Authorities insist the measure is not intended to restrict travel but to improve the state’s ability to track potential recruits in crises.
Military service itself remains voluntary.
