Germany dismisses Vance’s claims of EU interference in Hungarian elections

08 April 2026 18:04

The German government has rebuffed US Vice President J.D. Vance’s remarks alleging European Union interference in Hungary’s upcoming parliamentary elections.

Deputy government spokesperson Sebastian Hille expressed concern that Vance’s visit to Budapest just days before the April 12 vote could itself be seen as a form of interference, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Politico.

“We reject the accusation made by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance at an event in Hungary. I would like to point out — since Vance is complaining about the EU’s alleged interference in the election — that the US vice president was in Hungary just a few days before the election. This fact alone speaks for itself as to who is interfering,” Hille said.

He added that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has no preference regarding the election outcome and is prepared to accept whatever choice the Hungarian people make.
