Germany expands potential role in Hormuz security mission

15 May 2026 12:20

Germany has signalled its readiness to broaden its potential contribution to an international mission aimed at securing shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a statement from the German Ministry of Defence.

The ministry said Berlin is prepared to provide additional equipment and personnel if the mission proceeds. The updated position expands on earlier commitments, when Germany indicated it could deploy the minesweeper Fulda and a supply vessel, pending parliamentary approval.

In its latest statement, the Defence Ministry specified that Germany’s possible contribution could also include autonomous mine countermeasure systems, mine-clearing divers, specialised maritime protection units, and staff officers.

However, the ministry stressed that any participation would depend on several conditions, including a cessation of hostilities, the existence of an international legal mandate, and approval from the Bundestag.
