Germany expels Russian military attaché amid espionage probe
Germany has decided to expel the military attaché of the Russian embassy in Berlin amid an investigation into espionage.
The information was soon confirmed by the country’s foreign ministry, as reported by Der Spiegel.
The Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador. During the meeting, the ambassador was told that the military attaché of the Russian embassy must leave Germany immediately, as he was actually working for one of Russia’s intelligence services and is alleged to have been guiding the recently arrested spy for a long time.
Earlier, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office had ordered the arrest of the German-Ukrainian woman Ilona V. According to investigators, she allegedly collected military information about the war in Ukraine in Germany and passed it on to a contact person in the Russian embassy. According to Der Spiegel, the contact person is Andrej M., accredited as the deputy military attaché, who was actually working for Russian intelligence services and served as Ilona V.’s handler.
