Germany introduces measures to speed up migrant deportations
Germany's Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, introduced a new migration bill on October 11 aimed at streamlining deportations.
This proposed legislation would provide German authorities with increased authority to facilitate the repatriation of migrants who are identified as dangerous, the Deutsche Welle reported. In particular those with criminal backgrounds and involvement in people smuggling.
The package of measures includes an extension of the permissible detention period for such individuals, from 10 days to 28 days, granting authorities additional time to prepare for their deportation.
The proposed changes have been approved by other members of Germany's governing coalition, with Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck stating that they are designed to tackle "regulations that prevent repatriations or make them more difficult".
