Germany links Wagner boss retreat to lack of support

25 June 2023 16:57

The German government has suggested that Wagner PMC boss Yevgeny Prigozhin stopped the march on Moscow because he hoped for more support for his revolt in Russia.

The German Federal Foreign Office and Defence Ministry informed the chairmen of Bundestag’s (parliament) foreign affairs and defence committees about the current developments in Russia on June 24 night, Der Spiegel informs.

During an oral briefing, Tjorven Bellmann, political director of the Federal Foreign Office, and Siemtje Möller, parliamentary state secretary for defence, expressed suspicion that Wagner leader Prigozhin had not received the kind of support from Russian state forces that he had hoped for during the coup attempt, so he stopped his march on Moscow.

The government representatives could not provide information on the content of the agreement between the Kremlin and Prigozhin, or on the location of Putin, Defence Minister Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov during the phone conversation.

According to the newspaper, the foreign affairs and defence committees are due to meet in a special session early this week to discuss the topic.
