Germany on alert over energy supplies, says jet fuel system remains stable

21 April 2026 16:41

German Economy Minister Katherina Reiche has said jet fuel supplies in Germany are not at risk, although authorities are closely monitoring energy markets amid disruption caused by the Iran war.

Speaking at a trade fair in Hanover on April 21, Reiche said refineries were adjusting to higher demand and that immediate shortages were not expected, Caliber.Az reports via British media.

“We currently have less of an availability problem than a huge price problem,” Joachim Lang, Director General of the German Aviation Association (BDL), said in a statement.

“The price has more than doubled since the beginning of the conflict in the Middle East, and this means that we currently have to make significant adjustments to our plans, because you can't normally count on prices like these.”

The remarks came a day after Germany’s national security council met to review energy supply risks and agreed to create a special committee focused on energy security, according to sources.

The war in Iran has triggered widespread disruption across global energy markets, raising concerns in Europe over aviation fuel availability and potential knock-on effects for airlines during the summer travel season.

European carriers and regulators have warned that continued bottlenecks in jet fuel supply could lead to flight cancellations and operational disruption if conditions do not stabilise.

An EU spokesperson has previously said the bloc could coordinate a release of jet fuel stocks if supply pressures persist.
