Germany proposes €500 billion defence fund for EU amid security threats
Anton Hofreiter, Head of the Bundestag Committee on European Affairs from the Green Party, advocates for the establishment of a €500 billion defence fund within the European Union to finance defence projects, Funke reports.
Amidst growing security concerns, Hofreiter emphasizes the necessity for EU countries to unite, with the defence fund being one of the crucial measures proposed. He suggests utilizing these funds to enhance European infrastructure, including the development of vital transportation networks such as roads, bridges, and railroads, which are essential not only for economic growth but also for bolstering defence capabilities.
Additionally, Hofreiter supports the idea of providing Ukraine with Western weaponry to counter Russian fighter jets, although he opposes the deployment of European ground troops to Ukraine.
