Germany receives first NH-90 Sea Tiger helicopter, strengthening naval capabilities PHOTO
Germany’s Navy has taken delivery of the first of 30 new NH-90 Sea Tiger helicopters, a key step in modernizing its anti-submarine warfare capabilities.
According to Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, the aircraft will play a crucial role in defending against both underwater and surface threats and in hunting submarines, DW reports.
“[Russian President Vladimir] Putin is continuing to massively upgrade his navy. He has little or no need for it in Ukraine. The Black Sea Fleet is one thing, but the North Atlantic Fleet is something else,” Pistorius said. “This means that we, as NATO and as the Federal Republic of Germany, need to equip our naval forces quickly and better.”
The Sea Tiger, designed for deployment on frigates, marks a major modernization step for the German Navy. The helicopter will replace the Sea Lynx, which has been in service since 1981, enhancing Germany’s ability to respond to evolving maritime threats.
The acquisition reflects Germany’s commitment to strengthening NATO’s collective security amid ongoing concerns over Russia’s expanding naval capabilities in the Atlantic and beyond.
