Germany rules out possibility of US involvement in Israel-Iran conflict

16 June 2025 15:05

Germany does not expect the United States to become involved in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on June 16.

Speaking to Germany’s Deutschlandfunk radio, Wadephul emphasised Berlin's commitment to a diplomatic resolution and confirmed that European partners are actively engaging in efforts to de-escalate tensions, Caliber.Az reports.

"The United States made it clear from the beginning that it would not take part in this war. That was the very first statement from colleague Marco Rubio," Wadephul said.

When asked about recent reports that Israel requested US military support against Iran, Wadephul stressed that any such decision lies with the Trump administration, not the Israeli government.

"The position of the United States is very clear in all declarations and actions. I have no indication whatsoever that the United States has any interest in participating in this. By the way, neither does anyone else," he said.

Wadephul reiterated Germany's concerns over Iran's ballistic missile program and potential nuclear ambitions, warning that such threats extend beyond Israel and the Middle East to Europe itself. T"We’ve seen a program in Iran involving ballistic missiles. And they have a very long range and could possibly also be equipped with nuclear weapons. This could not only affect and unsettle Israel and the region, but also Europe," Wadephul said.

The German foreign minister noted that Berlin, alongside France and the United Kingdom, continues to pursue diplomatic talks with Tehran.  He said meaningful negotiations are possible if Iran demonstrates genuine willingness to abandon its nuclear ambitions.

“If Iran is seriously prepared to give up such targets and weapons, then there's a good chance of reaching an agreement. And that's why we are calling on Tehran to clearly demonstrate now that this is something they would do," he added.
