Germany’s Scholz supports 30-day ceasefire as path to just peace in Ukraine

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has expressed his support for the proposal of a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine.

In a post on X, Scholz stated, "The idea of a 30-day ceasefire is an important and correct step towards a just peace for Ukraine," Caliber.Az reports.

Scholz further emphasised that the ball is now in Russia's court, urging them to take action in pursuit of peace.

"We stand with Ukraine and the US and welcome the proposals from Jeddah. Now it is up to Putin," he added.

Note that, Ukraine has agreed to a 30-day ceasefire proposal with the US, contingent on Russia's reciprocal acceptance. This move follows high-level talks in Saudi Arabia, which marked a shift in US policy, lifting restrictions on military aid and intelligence sharing to Ukraine. 

The ceasefire could lead to peace negotiations, with US officials hoping it will prompt further talks to end the conflict. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy expressed readiness for peace, but emphasized that Russia’s agreement is crucial.

Russian forces, however, launched an airstrike on Kyiv shortly after Ukraine’s announcement, signaling ongoing tensions. Meanwhile, the US and Ukraine are working to secure a broader peace agreement, including a controversial minerals deal linking Ukraine's resources with US security interests.

The proposal, which Ukraine hopes to extend, was welcomed by international leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Macron, though they stressed the need for strong security guarantees for Ukraine. Despite progress in talks, Russia remains cautious, with Moscow continuing its offensive in the Kursk region. The situation remains volatile, with Russia’s readiness for a ceasefire still uncertain.
