Germany sees no reason to ease sanctions on Russia
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that there is no sense for reconsidering sanctions on Russia, reaffirming Berlin’s support for Ukraine despite pressures from global energy markets.
Merz said that even if the ongoing U.S.-Israeli confrontation with Iran ends quickly, leading to stabilisation in the oil and energy sectors, it would not justify relaxing sanctions on Moscow. He emphasised that Germany’s priority remains solidarity with Ukraine and that the country is prepared to face challenges associated with maintaining sanctions, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
He also said that he shares US President Donald Trump's hope for a quick end to the war between the US and Israel against Iran.
Earlier on March 10, the European Union also opposed easing restrictions on Russian oil. European Commissioner for Economy Valdis Dombrovskis described any such move as counterproductive.
