Germany strengthens Ukraine’s firepower with first RCH 155 artillery system delivery VIDEO

13 January 2025 20:12

Germany has delivered the first RCH 155 self-propelled artillery system to Ukraine, a milestone witnessed by Defence Minister Boris Pistorius at a ceremony in Kassel, reinforcing the country's steadfast commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defence efforts.

This cutting-edge mobile artillery system, considered one of the most advanced in the world, promises to enhance Ukraine’s firepower, offering a major strategic advantage, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

The RCH 155, developed by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and based on the BOXER wheeled armoured vehicle chassis, is a highly mobile and automated artillery system designed for modern combat. Operable by just two crew members, it combines automation with advanced targeting systems, reducing the risk to soldiers while ensuring rapid and precise strikes.

The RCH 155 is equipped with a 155mm L/52 howitzer, capable of hitting targets at up to 54 kilometres, depending on the ammunition used. This long-range capability is expected to complicate Russian forces’ ability to defend against Ukrainian artillery, especially as it can fire simultaneously with multiple rounds to overwhelm enemy positions.

Germany plans to deliver 54 RCH 155 units to Ukraine as part of a broader military aid package that includes additional IRIS-T air defence systems, Patriot missiles, and more self-propelled artillery.

The total value of Germany’s military assistance to Ukraine has exceeded 28 billion euros, with an additional 4 billion euros allocated for 2025, reinforcing its position as the second-largest supplier of military aid to Ukraine after the United States. The strategic goal of this support is to ensure Ukraine can maintain and expand its resistance to Russian aggression.

The RCH 155 system stands out not only for its firepower but also for its mobility, operating at speeds over 100 km/h on roads and offering protection against ballistic threats, mines, and chemical hazards. Its automation allows for rapid repositioning and quick deployment, essential in the fast-paced, evolving nature of modern warfare.

The system’s GPS-based navigation and advanced targeting software further ensure high accuracy even in GPS-denied environments.

Germany's commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s military capabilities underscores the growing international resolve to support Ukraine’s sovereignty and combat Russian aggression, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing war.
