Germany to release part of strategic oil reserves amid Middle East tensions
11 March 2026 18:50
The German government has decided to draw on part of its national oil reserves in response to the unstable security situation in the Middle East.
Business daily Handelsblatt said up to 19.5 million barrels could be released from the country’s strategic reserves.
Germany maintains emergency oil stockpiles to ensure energy security during supply disruptions or major geopolitical crises. The move comes as tensions in the Middle East raise concerns over potential impacts on global energy markets and supply routes.
Officials have not yet publicly detailed the timing or scope of the potential release.
