Germany to supply Ukraine with €340 million worth of high-performance radars

26 July 2025 05:26

German defence technology company HENSOLDT has announced a major contract to supply high-performance radar systems to Ukraine, in a deal valued at over €340 million.

The contract includes the delivery of TRML-4D long-range radars and SPEXER 2000 3D MkIII short-range systems to bolster Ukraine’s air defence capabilities amid the ongoing war with Russia, Caliber.Az reports.

The TRML-4D radar, based on cutting-edge Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) technology, can simultaneously track up to 1,500 air targets—including cruise missiles, drones, fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters—within a radius of 250 kilometres. This rapid detection capability is expected to significantly enhance Ukraine’s ability to respond to incoming threats.

“Our high-performance radars are urgently needed by Ukrainian air defence,” said HENSOLDT CEO Oliver Dörre. “A number of our systems have already been deployed in Ukraine since the beginning of Russia’s war of aggression. We are proud to continue contributing to the protection of civilians through this delivery.”

The contract also includes the SPEXER 2000 radar, a short-range system capable of automatically detecting and classifying ground, sea, and low-flying air targets. The SPEXER radar is integrated into Rheinmetall’s Skyranger 30 air defence vehicle and is in service with the German Armed Forces in various counter-unmanned aerial systems (cUAS) and high-energy laser applications.

HENSOLDT is one of Europe’s leading developers of sensor and radar technologies. In addition to TRML-4D and SPEXER, its portfolio includes passive radar systems such as Twinvis, and radars used aboard German Navy frigates and corvettes, for airspace surveillance, and at military airfields for approach control.

Both TRML-4D and SPEXER systems are also central components of Germany’s "Near and Very Short Range Air Defence System" (NNbS), a next-generation layered defence architecture.

The latest delivery reaffirms Germany’s role in equipping Ukraine with sophisticated air defence solutions and underscores the strategic importance of European military-industrial partnerships in countering evolving aerial threats.
