Germany vows €120 million to Pakistan for climate change mitigation

02 May 2023 20:09

Germany will allocate €120 million to Pakistan to overcome the consequences of a major flood last summer and global climate change.

According to the Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany, an agreement was reached on May 2 between the head of the department, Svenja Schulze, and the Minister for Climate Change of Pakistan, Sherry Rehman, on the sidelines of the international conference Petersberg Climate Dialogue in Berlin, TASS reports.

"Germany and Pakistan intend to deepen the climate partnership through concrete measures. This mainly concerns three areas: better flood protection, increased use of renewable energy sources and social safety nets against climate shocks," the report says.

Schulze, as specified in the ministry, promised to allocate about €120 million for this.

The bilateral climate and development partnership has been in place since 2021. In particular, in order to prevent floods in the Islamic Republic, watersheds are being built to use rainwater for irrigation during dry periods.

Pakistan has set itself the goal of halving harmful emissions by 2030 with international support.

In the same period, the share of renewable sources in electricity generation is planned to be increased to about 60 per cent.

The two-day conference Petersberg Climate Dialogue is a preparation for the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), which will be held from November 30 to December 12 in Dubai (UAE).
