Germany willing to purchase Patriot systems from US for Ukraine

Germany is prepared to buy Patriot air defence systems from the United States to provide them to Ukraine.

“We are also prepared to purchase additional Patriot systems from the US to make them available to Ukraine,” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced at a conference dedicated to the restoration of Ukraine that is currently taking place in Rome, Caliber.Az reports citing Ukrainian media outlets.

Merz further revealed that he asked US President Donald Trump last week to deliver the Patriots, clarifying that “the Americans need some of them themselves, but they also have a lot of them. [...] It has not yet been finalized whether a delivery will be made.”

The German chancellor's announcement came hours after another large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine, with 397 drones and 18 missiles having been launched overnight, primarily targeting Kyiv. Two people have been reportedly killed with at least another 24 people injured.

The matter regarding the delivery of Patriot systems has also been touched upon by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who has been speaking on this matter on July 10 in Kuala Lumpur.

During a press conference for the annual Association of Southeast Asian Nations Regional Forum, he revealed that the US was pushing NATO allies to give their systems to Ukraine.

He decried the fact that no one has so far been willing to share their US-made missile interceptive systems with Kyiv and pointed to countries like Germany and Spain that are in possession of these weapons.

Germany is one of the few countries that has already provided Ukraine with the Patriot systems. It has transferred two battery units since the outbreak of the conflict in 2022, with another unit having been given to Kyiv in joint co-operation with the Netherlands.
