Global mobile maker to bring AI services to feature phones
HMD, the Finnish phone manufacturer, announced at Mobile World Congress 2026 (MWC) plans to introduce modern features, including AI services, to its line of feature phones, with new capabilities rolling out throughout 2026.
According to GSMArena, the company aims to expand access to digital services for users with limited internet connectivity. Innovations will include a digital wallet, an AI-powered voice assistant, and support for video calls.
The rollout will start in select markets such as India before expanding more broadly.
The digital wallet will allow users to receive, store, and transfer money through local payment systems. It is being developed in partnership with fintech company Kivi3 and blockchain platform Polygon Labs, offering enhanced security via PIN protection.
AI integration will come through collaboration with Indian firm Sarvam AI. The voice assistant will handle simple queries and basic commands, such as making calls, setting alarms, or turning on the flashlight.
A dedicated AI service for elderly users is also in development, acting as a digital companion. A pilot project will launch in Europe, with potential expansion to other markets.
Additionally, HMD is developing the Xpress Chat app, which will enable video calls, voice messages, group chats, and photo sharing on the new devices.
