Google Maps undergoes major upgrade by integration of AI model Gemini VIDEO

14 March 2026 01:22

Google is expanding the role of its AI model Google Gemini across its ecosystem, announcing a new feature for Google Maps called “Ask Maps” that allows users to pose complex, real-world questions and receive detailed, personalized responses.

Previously, Google Maps often struggled to answer very specific queries such as where someone could charge their phone without having to queue for coffee. With Gemini integrated, however, the app can now interpret nuanced requests and return suggestions complete with directions, according to a review on this latest feature by The Verge.

The Ask Maps feature enables users to describe plans in a conversational way, adding as much or as little detail as they like. Gemini then analyzes the request and generates tailored recommendations, often drawing on preferences and places users have interacted with previously in Google Maps.

During a briefing with reporters, Google product manager Andrew Duchi offered an example of how the system works: “I have some friends coming from Midtown East to meet me after work. Can you find us a spot between the office and Midtown East that’s vegetarian, has a cozy aesthetic, and a table for four at seven o’clock tonight?”

Using Gemini, Maps would produce several options, analyzing user reviews and photos to extract information about factors such as atmosphere or how busy a venue tends to be. If a user has previously favourited or interacted with certain locations, those may also appear in the results. Once a suitable place is found, Ask Maps can go a step further by letting users book a table with a single tap.

The feature is initially rolling out this week in the United States and India on both Android and iOS devices, with desktop support expected in the near future. The launch in more regions is still to be announced.

Google is also using Gemini to revamp the visual experience of Maps itself. The company announced a new “Immersive Navigation” mode, describing it as “the largest upgrade to the Google Maps navigation experience in more than a decade.” When navigation begins, users will see refreshed map colors, detailed 3D buildings, elevated roadways, more realistic terrain and added greenery.

Privacy concerns

According to Miriam Daniel, vice president and general manager for Google Maps, responses generated by Gemini will rely only on data from Google Maps rather than information from other Google apps such as Gmail. When personalization occurs, she said, it will be based on previous searches in Maps or Google Search and on locations that users have saved, favorited or added to lists.

Platform for aggressive marketing?

When asked whether Google might eventually allow businesses such as restaurants or hotels to pay for prominent placement in AI-generated recommendations, Duchi declined to comment on future monetization plans. However, he said that paid placements currently do not influence which locations appear in Ask Maps suggestions.
