Graz school shooter informed mother moments before attack, police say

11 June 2025 13:20

Chilling new details have emerged concerning the recent shooting tragedy in Graz, revealing that the perpetrator notified his mother of the impending attack moments before the fatal incident.

Austrian police, during a search of the assailant's residence, also discovered a homemade explosive device, which has since been confirmed as non-functional, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

According to confidential police sources, the improvised explosive device (IED) constructed by 21-year-old Arthur A., a resident of a Graz suburb, was deemed inoperable.

Further insights from police sources indicate that the perpetrator had filmed a valedictory video at his parents' home, where he resided, shortly before the shooting. In this video, he reportedly informed his mother of his self-willed decision to carry out the assault. His mother received the video precisely 24 minutes after its transmission and promptly alerted law enforcement. However, by the time she made contact, her son had already commenced the deadly assault at the educational institution.

Earlier statements from the police of the federal state of Styria identified the presumed assailant as a 21-year-old local resident. He reportedly took his own life within the premises of the educational facility subsequent to perpetrating the crime. His underlying motives for the attack remain undetermined as investigations continue.

To recall, on June 10, a shooter opened fire at a high school in the Austrian city of Graz, killing ten people, including teenagers.

The victims included children between 14 and 18 years old. The perpetrator is also dead and the school has been secured, Austrian police said.

Police launched a large-scale operation on the morning of June 10, around 10 a.m., after receiving reports of gunfire inside the school. Authorities sealed off Dreierschuetzengasse street, and the Austrian special task force, known as Cobra, was deployed to the scene.

The suspect turned the gun on himself after the attack.

The perpetrator of the deadly shooting at BORG Dreierschützengasse school in Graz, which resulted in at least ten fatalities and dozens of injuries, has been identified as 22-year-old former student Artur A., who entered the school armed with a pistol and a shotgun.
