Greece and France may alter Great Sea Interconnector route

Greece and France are considering a minor change to the route of the Great Sea Interconnector submarine cable, which is intended to link the electricity grids of Greece and Cyprus and eventually Israel, Kathimerini reports, citing sources.

The route may be altered to prevent the cable from passing through areas of the Mediterranean that Türkiye considers part of its continental shelf, according to the newspaper. Ankara insists that any work in the area must be coordinated with the Turkish side.

Sources said Greece and France, whose companies are involved in the project, are considering rerouting the cable around the area of the so-called Fethiye-Kaş National Marine Park, whose creation Türkiye announced on August 15.

According to the sources, such a move would reduce the risk of a new dispute with Ankara but would not amount to recognition of Turkish jurisdiction in the area.
