Greece kickstarts peace march against US-NATO-EU wars
The Marathon Peace March against Greece's participation in the military plans of the US, NATO and the EU started from Marathon, where marathon races are traditionally held in Athens at a distance of 42 km 195 meters, TASS reports, citing the TV channel Skai.
The Peace March started from the Marathon Mound and will end near the Greek Ministry of National Defense, where an anti-imperialist rally will take place. The 2024 march coincides with the 61st anniversary of the first Peace March banned by the authorities, which took place in 1963. It is also being held against the backdrop of events in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip, as well as the 25th anniversary of NATO's bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999, the channel said.
The Greek Committee for International Détente and Peace (EEDYE), which organized the rally, called in a statement for "mass participation in the 41st Marathon Peace March, expressing its strong concern over the escalation of war in the Middle East following Iran's attack on Israel in response to Israel's bloody strike on the Iranian embassy in Damascus." "The Peace Marathon should be a platform to express the people's opposition to all these plans and Greece's participation in military operations," the committee emphasized. The main slogans of the march are "rejection of Greece's participation in the US-NATO-EU wars, no Greek military outside the borders of their country, close US military bases of death on Greek territory, solidarity with the Palestinian people."
According to the ERT-news TV channel, the marchers intend to "express the people's resolute opposition to becoming 'cannon fodder' for the imperialists in the interests of the Greek bourgeoisie." "The policies of the Greek government and the Euro-Atlantic parties must be strongly condemned. We express international solidarity with the peoples of the world fighting for their rights," the organizers said in a statement.
