Greek PM vows to complete fence on Turkish border
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that the fence in the Evros region on the border with Türkiye will be completed to protect against illegal migrants, regardless of whether the EU allocates money or not.
According to Caliber.Az, this is reported by Russian media.
“Tomorrow I will be in Evros and I will have the opportunity to sign a decision to expand the construction of a fence that will protect Evros and our homeland from illegal immigration,” Mitsotakis said at a pre-election meeting with residents of the Gerakas district in Attica.
The head of the Greek government sharply criticized the amendment against EU funding for the construction of fences, submitted to the European Parliament by left-wing parties and supported by the MEP from the largest Greek opposition party SYRIZA Dimitrios Papadimoulis.
According to him, as a result of the policy of the Greek authorities, Europe is changing its attitude and now recognizes the importance of protecting external borders.
“But to all those who are trying to undermine the work of the government today, I have a clear answer: with or without European money, the fence on Evros will be completed,” the prime minister said.
The total length of the land border between Greece and Türkiye is about 200 kilometers. The Greek authorities have been building a barrier fence on the border since 2020, part of it - 37.5 kilometers - has already been built.
