Greenland deal respects self-determination, Danish PM tells UN

The agreement between the United States, Denmark and Greenland respects Greenland’s right to self-determination and the territorial integrity of Denmark, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said.

Speaking at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Frederiksen outlined what she described as key provisions of the agreement.

“The deal respects the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, as well as Greenland's right to self-determination," she said.

US President Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen signed a trilateral security agreement aimed at expanding the US military presence on Greenland and easing tensions over the strategically located Arctic territory.

The agreement was signed in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly during a trilateral ceremony following Trump’s address to world leaders.
