Groundbreaking discovery at Italy's Sforza Castle reveals hidden tunnels historical insights

According to a recent article, Greek Reporter highlights that Italian researchers have uncovered a network of hidden underground passages, offering fresh insights into the castle’s architectural history. 

These long-forgotten structures provide fresh insights into the castle’s historical importance and architectural design.

This discovery, part of a collaborative project with the castle, reveals the potential strategic and personal functions these passages may have served.

Ancient texts and sketches, thought to be by Leonardo da Vinci, suggest possible uses for these tunnels. Some may have been constructed for military purposes, while others might have connected the castle to nearby landmarks.

One tunnel, according to historical records, could have linked the castle to the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie, where Beatrice d’Este, wife of Ludovico Sforza (Ludovico il Moro), is buried.

For centuries, these passages have sparked speculation, shrouded in myths and legends that have intrigued historians and Renaissance enthusiasts. Today, modern technology is turning these tales into concrete evidence.

To explore the castle's underground levels, researchers utilized advanced technologies such as ground-penetrating radar and laser scanners. The ground-penetrating radar, which uses electromagnetic waves, detected concealed spaces without the need for digging.

At the same time, laser scanners generated highly detailed 3D models of the subsurface, offering accurate measurements of the tunnels' size and characteristics.

These discoveries verified the existence of underground structures, providing fresh insights into the castle's architectural development. The research not only enhances the historical understanding of Sforza Castle but also paves the way for future exploration and conservation initiatives.

A key objective of this research is to develop a "digital twin" of Sforza Castle. This virtual replica will meticulously document the castle’s present condition while reconstructing historical features that have been lost over time.

By combining archaeological, historical, and technological data into one interactive model, the digital twin will provide users with an entirely new way to engage with the castle’s history.
