Hamas tunnels stymie Israeli advances Underground fortifications complicate military operations

02 September 2024 18:23

The extensive network of underground tunnels created by Hamas in the Gaza Strip is significantly hindering Israeli military operations. An Israeli army spokesman revealed that the challenge of fighting against Hamas is compounded by the group's use of these subterranean passages, which delay progress and complicate efforts to neutralize the threat.

Initially estimated at around 400 kilometres, the length of Hamas's tunnel network is now believed to stretch to approximately 800 kilometres, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

These tunnels, which can extend to depths of over 75 meters—equivalent to the height of a 25-story building—pose a formidable obstacle for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). According to IDF officials, it could take years to completely dismantle this underground stronghold.

Israeli data indicates that destroying just one kilometre of these tunnels requires at least 16 tons of explosives. The tunnels are fortified with blast doors and are equipped with telecommunications gear housed in air-conditioned server rooms, reflecting a high level of sophistication. This infrastructure, reportedly ordered by Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, has been designed to withstand extensive military efforts.

The challenges posed by these tunnels underscore the complexities of the ongoing conflict and the significant efforts required to address the entrenched network of Hamas's subterranean fortifications.
