What caused Hayden Panettiere’s sudden death at 36? Coroner reveals cause

Actress Hayden Panettiere died from the toxic effects of fentanyl and four other drugs, with her death ruled accidental, according to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office in South Carolina.

Panettiere, best known for her roles in Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise, was 36, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

She died on August 16 after emergency responders were called to a residence in Greenville following a report of cardiac arrest.

The coroner said her cause of death was the “toxic effects” of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine. An autopsy found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death.

Emergency responders received a call at about 1:51 pm. Attempts to revive Panettiere were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead at 2:32 pm.

Police had previously said their preliminary investigation found no indication of foul play or suspicious circumstances. However, the circumstances surrounding how Panettiere came into contact with the drugs remain under investigation.

Panettiere had spoken publicly about her history of substance abuse, including alcohol and opioid addiction. In her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, she wrote about her struggles and recovery.

She also discussed her experiences with addiction in an interview with CBS News earlier this year, saying she hoped speaking publicly would help others.

Panettiere began acting as a child and later gained recognition for her role as Claire Bennet in Heroes. She went on to star as Juliette Barnes in Nashville, earning two Golden Globe nominations for the role.

Her film credits included Remember the Titans, Ice Princess, Bring It On: All or Nothing, Scream 4 and Scream VI.

Panettiere is survived by her daughter, Kaya, whom she had with former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko.
