Poland's deputy defence chief: Nawrocki becoming Orban’s vassal

24 March 2026 18:30

Deputy Defence Minister Cezary Tomczyk has sharply criticised President Nawrocki’s recent meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, describing the President as “becoming a vassal of Orban” and warning that Poland risks being drawn into a pro-Russian political entanglement.

Speaking on Radio ZET, Tomczyk said: “He has gotten himself entangled in a pro-Russian mess and doesn’t really know how to get out. And we are somewhat hostages to this policy.”

He added that the President’s stance has changed dramatically over the past four months, undermining public trust: “Four months ago, all of Poland was proud of President Nawrocki for refusing to meet Orban. Now his position has shifted 180 degrees.”

Tomczyk emphasised that Hungary currently has a pro-Russian government and that Poland should lead by example rather than following: “I would expect the President of Poland to set an example, not emulate a pro-Russian figure who ignores the fact that Putin almost triggered a Third World War. Hungary should be learning from Poland, not the other way around.”

He also accused Orban and certain politicians of trying to create a “soft underbelly in the EU and the West, which Moscow can easily exploit,” questioning whether such alliances are in Poland’s interest.
