Head of commission: Azerbaijan facing hybrid attacks as COP29 approaches

Azerbaijan, which will host the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in November, is facing groundless hybrid attacks and an information campaign to tarnish the country's image.

Ramid Namazov, head of the interim commission on foreign interference and hybrid threats, made the remarks at a public discussion themed “Hybrid threats against COP29” in the Azerbaijani Parliament, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

“With this event approaching, some foreign media outlets have launched campaigns to vilify Azerbaijan. The forces against our country are trying to exert pressure under the pretext of the small number of women in the COP29 Organising Committee, violations of freedom of speech and human rights, the absence of a peace treaty with Armenia, and the fact that Azerbaijan is an oil and gas producer. Such hybrid attacks against Azerbaijan are unacceptable,” he said.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held in Azerbaijan on November 11-22. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11, 2023. During two weeks, Baku will become a global hub, welcoming around 70,000 to 80,000 international guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aimed at preventing dangerous human interference with the climate system.  The abbreviation COP means "Conference of the Parties" and refers to the highest decision-making body responsible for overseeing the implementation of the UNFCCC.
