Heavy rains, flooding leave more than 80 dead in India and Nepal

At least 83 people have died in India and Nepal as torrential rains, flooding and landslides hit several parts of the two countries, leaving thousands of people displaced, ABC News reports.

In India’s Uttar Pradesh state, 62 people have died over the past three days, while 46 others were injured and more than 1,000 residential buildings were damaged. Schools have been closed in Lucknow and other affected districts, while rescue services are evacuating residents from flooded areas.

Flooding has also affected the eastern state of Odisha, where more than 75,000 people have been evacuated to safe areas.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Lucknow, rainfall intensity is expected to decrease as the cyclonic system over the Bay of Bengal weakens. Moderate rainfall, however, is expected to continue through September 29.

In neighbouring Nepal, five people remain missing, while 194 houses have been destroyed or damaged. The country is still dealing with the aftermath of a major August flood that killed more than 1,400 people.
