Heavy snowfall disrupts travel across parts of South Africa VIDEO

10 August 2026 18:07

Heavy snowfall has affected several parts of South Africa, forcing road closures and creating hazardous conditions for motorists.

In the Eastern Cape, three mountain passes were closed because of heavy snow, according to Provincial Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqos, Caliber.Az reports via South African media.

Several vehicles had become stranded, and some motorists were unable to leave their cars.

Authorities are also monitoring other mountain passes in the province, where continued snowfall has caused problems in high-altitude areas. Emergency and road crews have been deployed to assist motorists.

Snow and icy conditions were also reported near the Swartberg Pass in the Western Cape. The pass was closed as a safety precaution after a thick layer of ice formed on the road, although some motorists were still able to pass through. Local media reported that some families had travelled to the area specifically to see the snowfall.

The TimesLive newspaper reported that snow and icy conditions had affected parts of the highway between Durban and Johannesburg. Several roads in KwaZulu-Natal province were also closed because of the weather.

The South African Weather Service has warned of an approaching cold front expected to bring colder and windier conditions across the country.
