Hezbollah calls for referendum on Lebanon’s talks with Israel
13 May 2026 16:36
A senior Hezbollah official, Nawaf al-Moussawi, has called on Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to hold a referendum on the issue of direct negotiations with Israel and the signing of a peace agreement.
Al-Moussawi said the president is “cornered” and argued that any decision on negotiations must reflect the will of the majority of the Lebanese people, AlarabyTube reports.
He also criticised Aoun’s upcoming visit to the United States and a possible meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
According to him, the president should inform the US side and the American ambassador in Beirut that any steps toward negotiations can only proceed after approval through a nationwide referendum.
