Hungarian PM calls for renewed diplomacy with Russia to address Ukraine conflict

19 July 2024 12:14

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has proposed to EU heads of state the restoration of diplomatic communication channels with Russia as a means to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

In a report submitted to European Council President Charles Michel, Orbán outlined several key proposals aimed at advancing peace efforts, Caliber.Az reports, citing the document published on the Hungarian prime minister's website.

Orbán's report suggests initiating high-level political discussions with China regarding the conditions for organizing a future peace conference.

He also advocates for resuming direct diplomatic communication with Russia while maintaining current high-level contacts with Ukraine.

The Hungarian leader emphasized the need for restoring direct diplomatic lines to improve political interactions with Russia.

Additionally, Orbán proposed a "coordinated political offensive" aimed at the Global South, arguing that the region's respect has been diminished due to the West’s stance on the Ukrainian conflict.

He contends that this has led to the "global isolation of the transatlantic community."

In his report, Orbán expressed hope that these proposals would aid in advancing peacekeeping initiatives and contribute to efforts for settling the conflict in Ukraine. He anticipates that Michel could present these suggestions to European Union leaders "at an appropriate occasion and in a convenient format."
