Hungarian PM optimistic about deal with Trump, predicts tough times for EU leaders
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has expressed confidence that his government would successfully reach an agreement with US President Donald Trump, while predicting challenging times ahead for EU leadership.
Orbán shared his thoughts on X, reflecting on the recent EU summit in Brussels, the first since Trump’s inauguration, Caliber.Az reports.
“Yesterday we held the first EU-summit in Brussels since President Trump was inaugurated. It was a strange gathering. Everyone in Brussels can see the Trump tornado coming, but most still think they can get away from it. They won't,” Orbán said.
The Hungarian leader acknowledged the significant changes Trump had already initiated, highlighting key shifts in US policy in just 14 days. “In 14 days, Donald Trump has already turned the world upside down with a few measures. The gender madness in America is over, the financing of globalist Soros organizations is over, illegal migration is over, and support for the Russian-Ukrainian war is also over. In other words, everything that the bureaucrats in Brussels have tried to force down our throats in recent years is over.”
Orbán also warned that the global trade landscape is changing. “We can also say goodbye to the rules of world trade as we know them. President Trump will stand up for American interests, even against Europe,” he added, emphasizing that Europe would face a tough period ahead.
“The European Union faces difficult months ahead and the bureaucrats in Brussels are going to have a tough time,” Orbán stated. Despite these challenges, he expressed confidence in Hungary's approach to dealing with the new US administration.
“We need to make an agreement, a deal, to preserve our economic relations with the United States. And a really good deal can be made by those who not only know but also respect each other,” Orbán remarked.
He also noted that Hungary had long anticipated Trump’s return to power, which positioned them well for future negotiations. “We always knew that President Trump would return, so we were prepared. We are constantly negotiating and we will make a good deal with the new administration of the United States.”
In a final jab at EU officials, Orbán commented, “And what about the bureaucrats in Brussels? You’ve made your bed, now lie in it!”
