Hungarian PM warns of endless war risks over Ukraine's EU accession
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has stated that the accelerated accession of Ukraine to the European Union could provoke a "never-ending war."
In a post on his X account, Orban wrote that by pushing this initiative, Brussels is effectively obligating European taxpayers to finance the Ukrainian army for decades, Caliber.Az reports.
“This is not peace. It’s a blank cheque for endless war,” the politician added. He explained that Ukraine lacks clearly defined borders, a stable economy, and full sovereignty.
In March, the Hungarian prime minister claimed that EU countries intended to offer Ukraine membership in the Union in exchange for continuing its military conflict with Russia. Hungarian lawmakers have estimated the potential cost of Ukraine's integration at €2.5 trillion. In February, Hungary vetoed the start of the first stage of Ukraine’s EU accession talks.
Later, diplomats from Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia called on Brussels to present concrete proposals on Ukraine's accession process. According to Friedrich Merz, leader of Germany's Christian Democratic Union, the prospect of Ukraine joining the EU can only be considered after the conflict is resolved. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has stated that Ukraine's bid to join the EU is its sovereign right, but security is a separate issue.
