Hungarian prime minister expected to visit Poland next week

15 May 2026 13:31

Hungary’s new Prime Minister Péter Magyar is expected to visit Poland as early as next week, according to Polish government spokesman Adam Szłapka.

Speaking in an interview with RMF radio, Szłapka said the meeting with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk is likely to take place on Wednesday.

“He will most likely meet with Prime Minister Tusk on May 20 next week,” Szłapka said.

He added that meetings with Polish President Andrzej Duda and Cardinal Grzegorz Ryś cannot be ruled out.

Szłapka also commented on the potential for closer alignment between Warsaw and Budapest on Ukraine-related policy, suggesting that relations could improve under Hungary’s new leadership.

“It will probably be for the better. Views or rhetoric are one thing, but the fact that Viktor Orbán has at times behaved, to put it mildly, irrationally from Europe’s perspective—and, it seems, from Hungary’s as well—or acted in the interests of certain external partners of his, is quite another matter,” he said.

He added that early decisions by the new Hungarian government could indicate changes in its approach toward Ukraine, Russia, and broader European policy.

It remains unclear whether Magyar’s visit to Poland will be his first foreign trip since taking office. However, Hungary’s new foreign minister, Anita Orbán, has already held her first telephone conversation with Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski.
