Hungary’s future foreign minister Anita Orbán to also serve as deputy prime minister

25 April 2026 21:47

Hungary’s incoming foreign minister Anita Orbán will also hold the post of deputy prime minister in the country’s new government.

The announcement was made on social media platform X by leader of the Tisza party Péter Magyar, who is expected to become Hungary’s next prime minister.

“In addition to her duties as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Orban Anita will also serve as Deputy Prime Minister in the TISZA government,” Magyar wrote.

He added that in his absence she would be expected to chair cabinet meetings and represent the government at official events.

Magyar also noted that Orbán is currently in Brussels for consultations on Hungary’s access to EU funds, which have been partially frozen amid rule-of-law and anti-corruption concerns under the previous administration.

She is reportedly involved in discussions aimed at unlocking around €35 billion in suspended European Union financing.

Anita Orbán, who is not related to outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, is set to replace Péter Szijjártó as head of Hungary’s foreign ministry.

Under the planned restructuring, trade responsibilities will be transferred to a separate economic and energy ministry, while the foreign ministry itself will be renamed.

Magyar is expected to be elected prime minister at the first session of the new parliament on May 9, with his cabinet set to include 16 ministries—five more than the current government.
