Hungary's PM-elect to meet president to start government handover

14 April 2026 12:30

Hungary’s prime minister-designate Péter Magyar has accepted an invitation from President Tamás Sulyok for a personal meeting that will mark the beginning of the government formation process.

Magyar, leader of the Tisza Party and winner of the parliamentary elections, announced the development in a Facebook post, confirming his attendance at the meeting scheduled for April 15.

“Received a letter from the President of the Republic. I will be there on Wednesday. Immediate transfer of government and inauguration of the new government are in Hungary’s interest,” Péter Magyar wrote.

The meeting between the Hungarian president and the election winner will take place on April 15 at the Sándor Palace. Magyar reiterated his intention to meet with the president and called for the swift transfer of power to a new government that will act in Hungary’s national interest.

Under Hungary’s constitution, the president is required to convene the inaugural session of the new National Assembly within 30 days of the election—no later than May 12—during which the head of state will formally nominate a candidate for prime minister.
