Hungary sends ballots for EU membership vote on Ukraine

10 April 2025 13:56

Next week, the Hungarian government will begin mailing ballots to citizens for a nationwide referendum on whether Ukraine should be accepted into the European Union.

This move was announced by Gergely Gulyás, the head of Hungary’s Prime Minister’s Office, during a meeting with journalists, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

Gulyás displayed the ballot, which had previously been published in the press, showing only one question: “Do you support Ukraine’s membership in the European Union?” The two possible responses are “Yes” or “No.”

The ballot is printed on special paper designed to prevent tampering or fraud. Voting will run until the end of May, and the referendum results will be processed under strict supervision.

“These results will be notarized,” Gulyás explained, adding that the government is committed to ensuring transparency throughout the process.

The Hungarian government has made it clear that it opposes the rushed accession of Ukraine to the European Union, a stance that contrasts with the leadership of the EU. Gulyás emphasized that hastily admitting Ukraine could cause significant damage to the European economy, particularly its agricultural sector.

“The accession of Ukraine to the European Union should not be based on political will but should be determined by Ukraine’s accomplishments and its ability to meet the necessary conditions for membership,” Gulyás stated. He holds a ministerial rank in the Hungarian government.

Gulyás also highlighted that Budapest would base its future discussions with Brussels on the results of the referendum.

“It’s important that Hungary’s voice on this matter is heard,” Gulyás concluded, underscoring the significance of the national referendum in shaping the country’s stance on Ukraine's EU ambitions.
