Hungary sets conditions for supporting Ukraine’s EU accession bid
Hungary will only support Ukraine’s accession process to the European Union if Kyiv fulfills 11 demands related to the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine’s Transcarpathia region, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar said.
Magyar stated that the conditions are mandatory for Budapest’s approval of Ukraine’s EU integration efforts, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
“The 11 points we are asking for are what all minorities in Europe are entitled to; we are not asking for more,” he said.
According to Magyar, Hungary is seeking guarantees for the Hungarian minority’s rights to maintain its own educational and cultural institutions in Transcarpathia, a western Ukrainian region bordering Hungary.
Budapest also wants future Ukrainian language and education legislation to be coordinated with the local Hungarian community, he added.
