Hungary to swear in new prime minister on May 9

22 April 2026 17:56

Hungary’s incoming prime minister will be sworn in on May 9, marking a major political shift in the country.

Péter Magyar announced the date in a post on X, according to Caliber.Az.

“On the afternoon of 9 May, following the official prime ministerial swearing-in ceremony, we will hold a celebratory event marking political change in Budapest’s Kossuth Square, next to Parliament,” he wrote.

The 45-year-old lawyer and leader of the Tisza Party secured victory in the 2026 parliamentary election, defeating incumbent Viktor Orbán, who made history as the country's longest-serving prime minister with a cumulative 20 years as head of the government.

Magyar's win is set to reshape Hungary’s political landscape, as his party is expected to command a supermajority in parliament, holding 141 of the 199 seats.
