Hungary to take part in Trump’s Board of Peace without funding commitment

22 January 2026 16:05

Hungary’s Prime Minister’s Office Chief Gergely Gulyás said the country’s participation in the new international body proposed by US President Donald Trump — the Board of Peace for Gaza — will not involve any financial obligations.

He responded to reports claiming that obtaining permanent status in the council would cost $1 billion, Caliber.Az reports via Hungarian media.

“Hungary will join the new Board of Peace under the condition that it will not have to pay, even three years or more after membership, and will decide whether to remain if conditions change,” Gulyás noted.

The Board of Peace is a US-led international initiative launched at the 2026 World Economic Forum in Davos, originally focused on facilitating ceasefire, reconstruction, governance, and stabilisation in the Gaza Strip as part of Trump’s peace plan. It has since been described as expanding to address broader global conflict issues beyond Gaza.

According to the draft charter, countries are invited by the US president to join and serve on the board; membership terms are typically three years, but contributing at least $1 billion in cash funds within the first year grants a permanent seat.

Although the board’s charter outlines intentions to promote stability, lawful governance, and enduring peace in conflict-affected regions, its operational framework and relationship with the United Nations remain unclear and have drawn scepticism from some traditional UN supporters.
