Hungary vows to block EU sanctions against Georgian leaders
Hungary has pledged that it will not allow the European Union to impose sanctions on Georgian leaders, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated following a meeting with Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze in Budapest.
FM Szijjártó said that Hungary was proud to have excellent relations with Tbilisi and the Georgian Dream party, and that Hungarians would always support the Georgians and would never allow the EU to impose sanctions on Georgian leaders, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
“We know very well what it means to swim against the current. We fully understand what it is like not to fully align with the liberal mainstream. And since your government pursues a patriotic policy, that is precisely why the Georgian people support their government,” Szijjártó said.
He emphasized that Hungary understands the challenges of resisting the liberal mainstream and views the patriotic orientation of the Georgian government as the key reason for its broad public support.
In addition, FM Szijjártó suggested that Mayor Kaladze share his experience in managing the Georgian capital and even deliver lectures to the mayor of Budapest, highlighting the close cooperative ties between the two cities.
