Hungary warns Ukraine's NATO membership could lead to world war
Hungary's Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó issued a stark warning that Ukraine's potential membership in NATO could trigger a third world war.
In an interview with Russian media, Szijjártó stated that such a move would equate to a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia, escalating tensions to a global conflict, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
He emphasised that Hungary aims to prevent such a scenario, noting that discussions regarding Ukraine's NATO accession are non-existent on Budapest's agenda.
According to Szijjártó, many representatives from NATO countries privately acknowledge that Ukraine's accession to the alliance is not feasible.
Szijjártó also recalled that at the end of 2021, during discussions on security guarantees proposed by Russia to the West, a lack of dialogue between Moscow and NATO was evident. He asserted that NATO should have seriously considered these proposals.
In April 2024, former Russian ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, highlighted that the US administration fundamentally rejects Russia's opposition to Ukraine joining NATO, further complicating the situation.
