IAEA leader considers UN Secretary-General candidacy with Argentina's support

02 April 2025 11:31

Rafael Grossi, the current head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has expressed his intention to run for the position of UN Secretary-General when António Guterres' tenure concludes in 2026.

The Argentine daily La Nacion has named Grossi as a strong contender for the prestigious role, per Caliber.Az.

During a recent appearance at the Argentine Council on International Relations (CARI), Grossi shared that the selection process for Guterres' successor has yet to begin. However, he clarified that the nomination process for the next UN Secretary-General would kick off at the end of 2025, following an official call for candidates.

"I am giving it serious thought, and I am thinking about it very seriously. That’s all I can say for now," Grossi remarked when asked about his potential candidacy for the top UN position.

Grossi also emphasized his close communication with Argentine President Javier Milei, with whom he has had multiple discussions on the subject.

“Of course, it would be an honor for my country to nominate me as a candidate, but ultimately, this is a decision that the president must make,” Grossi added, highlighting the importance of his country’s support.

Born in Buenos Aires in 1961, Grossi boasts over 35 years of diplomatic experience. He has held key roles, including Argentina’s ambassador to Austria and its permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna. Grossi has served as the Director General of the IAEA since December 2019 and was re-elected for a second term in March 2023.

Reports from Infobae in mid-March revealed Grossi’s interest in becoming the next UN Secretary-General. While he has been widely considered a potential successor to Guterres, he has not yet been officially approached for the role.
