Atomic agency releases alarming report on nuclear safety in Ukraine
On September 4, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) released a new report detailing its efforts to ensure nuclear safety and security amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
This comes two years after Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi crossed the frontline to establish IAEA operations at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) and work to avert a potential nuclear accident, Caliber.Az informs, citing Russian media.
The 28-page report outlines both the difficulties and successes of the IAEA’s efforts to safeguard Europe’s largest nuclear facility since Grossi’s historic mission began on September 1, 2022.
The report describes incidents such as shelling and drone strikes at the plant, which has also experienced multiple power outages.
Reaffirming its "unwavering support for nuclear safety, security, and safeguards in Ukraine," the report also updates on the IAEA’s ongoing activities at other Ukrainian nuclear sites and its comprehensive assistance program for the country.
Grossi also emphasized the ongoing precariousness of the situation at the ZNPP.
“Two years into our continuous presence at the occupied Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant, our commitment to preventing a nuclear accident remains steadfast. Despite the significant challenges and risks, we are dedicated to assessing the situation and keeping the international community informed,” he stated.
