World leaders hail historic Azerbaijan–Armenia peace deal signed in Washington
Global leaders have welcomed the signing of a historic peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia at the White House Peace Summit, brokered under the auspices of US President Donald J. Trump on August 8.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hailed the accord as “the dawn of a new era of peace, stability, and cooperation in the South Caucasus, a region that has endured decades of conflict and human suffering” in a post on X, Caliber.Az reports.
He congratulated Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and the people of Azerbaijan, calling the agreement “a reflection of wisdom, foresight and sagacity in charting a course for a peaceful future.”
Sharif added that “Pakistan has always stood by the brotherly nation of Azerbaijan” and praised the “facilitation role of the United States, under President Donald Trump, in bringing the two sides together and securing an agreement that opens new avenues for trade, connectivity, and regional integration.”
“It is our hope that this spirit of dialogue will serve as an example for other regions facing protracted conflicts,” he added.
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev described the agreement as “a historically significant achievement” that “paved the way for the establishment of diplomatic relations and the development of cooperation between [the two countries] on the basis of lasting peace,” his press secretary Ruslan Zheldibay cited him as saying on Telegram.
He credited the breakthrough to “the energetic and effective mediation mission of US President Donald Trump,” noting that Kazakhstan had contributed to the achievement of such important agreements between Azerbaijan and Armenia by offering Almaty as a venue for negotiations at the level of foreign ministers on the key parameters of the peace treaty.
Additionally, the Saudi Foreign Ministry also welcomed the announcement, praising Washington’s role in brokering the deal.
In a statement on X, it expressed hope that the accord would “mark the beginning of a new phase of understanding, cooperation, and the consolidation of security and stability between Armenia and Azerbaijan, in a manner that serves the interests of both peoples and the Caucasus region.”
