Palestinian president to seek international action against Israeli Gaza offensive
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas strongly condemned Israel’s plan to fully occupy the Gaza Strip on August 8, announcing that he will urgently engage with international actors, including the United Nations Security Council, seeking immediate and binding measures to halt Israel’s actions.
He also called on the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Arab League to convene emergency meetings to coordinate a unified response to “protect the Palestinian people and end the aggression,” Caliber.Az reports via WAFA.
In a statement, Abbas rejected the Israeli cabinet’s decision to forcibly displace nearly one million Palestinians from Gaza City and the northern Gaza Strip to the south, describing the move as a dangerous and unlawful escalation.
He labelled the plan a "full-fledged crime," accusing Israel of continuing a policy of genocide, systematic killing, starvation, and siege against the Palestinian population,
Abbas emphasised that the Israeli measures violate international humanitarian law and United Nations resolutions, warning that these actions will trigger an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe. He linked this plan to a broader pattern of settlement expansion, annexation of Palestinian land, settler violence, attacks on religious sites, withholding of Palestinian funds, and efforts to undermine Palestinian institutions—practices he said amount to crimes against humanity and threaten regional and international peace.
He also called on the international community, the United Nations, and the International Committee of the Red Cross to ensure the immediate, unrestricted delivery of humanitarian aid and fuel to all areas of the Gaza Strip.
In a direct appeal, Abbas urged US President Donald Trump to intervene, urging him to fulfill his promise to stop Israel’s "genocidal war" on Gaza and to work toward lasting peace in the region.
He concluded by stating that the only path to ending the crisis and ensuring security is to restore Palestinian governance and security control over Gaza as part of a sovereign Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
