Germany suspends weapons sales to Israel over Gaza offensive
Germany has announced the suspension of military exports to Israel that could be used in the Gaza Strip, amid growing international concern over the scale and objectives of Israel’s ongoing operations in the enclave.
Speaking at a press conference, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the decision comes in response to Israel’s latest military push, which includes the approved takeover of Gaza City by the Israeli security cabinet, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
“It is increasingly difficult to understand how Israel’s operations in the Strip, which now includes seizing Gaza City, would help achieve its aims,” Merz stated.
“Under these circumstances, the German government will not authorise any exports of military equipment that could be used in the Gaza Strip until further notice.”
The announcement marks a significant policy shift for Berlin, which has long supported Israel’s right to self-defence but is now signalling unease over the humanitarian and strategic implications of the Gaza campaign.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan to take control of Gaza City was approved overnight, prompting a wave of condemnation from international leaders. Among them was UK Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, who warned the move would escalate violence.
“This will only bring more bloodshed,” Sir Keir said, urging Israel to “reconsider” its strategy.
Hamas also warned Israel that launching its new offensive would amount to “sacrificing” the remaining hostages, most of which are being held by the terror group in Gaza City.
